Intellectual understanding and Realisation
In our society today we are so conditioned to develop intellectual understanding of things. We study something and quickly move to ‘next’ without depth of understanding or contemplation in the heart. The mind is a wonderful and powerful tool. However it is easy also to expect to quickly understand or ‘get’ spiritual pointings to truth in this way. We tend to try to tackle the wisdom and depth of scripture with our dualistic thinking. We tend to study something, understanding it mentally and think – ‘got it….next!’ It goes without out saying that this kind of superficial understanding is mental, it is not deep and it is not really true understanding either! It has it’s place but it cannot be compared with realisation.
What is realisation then? To take time to listen to a profound truth with faith and trust in it’s source, to swallow it, digest it, assimilate it, integrate it and live it in the heart is a very different matter. Only then can something really be understood in the deeper sense. Even then the slippery deception of egoic dualist thinking can sneak in to claim some understanding and say ‘I’ve got it!’. This can be almost impossible to detect.
So if spiritual truth is not just understood with the dualistic mind, with the intellect, but assimilated and integrated in the depth of ones being so that actually this truth transforms and even replaces our own self, our own identity. Then the fruits of this introspection and marination can grow and ripen. Truth somehow lands in the heart and the beingness is released from the grip of living from such a restricted and shallow realm. Spaciousness is revealed, the True Self is discovered. But beware!
The stronghold of the mind can be particularly persistent and quite tyrannical when we are onto something.
Mooji is an absolute master at tackling this backlash of the mind in my experience!
I am so grateful for his pointings on this and his insistence on remaining as ‘awareness’. If the minds games are seen from the deeper place, from the heart, the venom of the sting is neutralised!
